The latest publication in the European Intelligence Academy’s Research Paper Series is a fascinating study by Dr. Nick Miller on “The Assassination of Park Chung-hee and its Initial Aftermath: Views from the Declassified Archives of the United States Government“. Based on extensive archival research, the author posits that every key player, including Korean and American intelligence agencies, was surprised by the assassination of South Korea’s leader in 1979. In addition to surprise, which was the most consistent theme among key players, there was considerable chaos as the United States and its South Korean allies desperately tried to determine who the culprit of the assassination was and whether North Korea was involved in the incident.
